The Pumpkin Spice flavor is used in many coffee drinks, as well as in other fall foods. It’s a mix of spices, including cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and sometimes Allspice.

Does pumpkin spice contain pumpkin?

The spice mixture is sometimes called Pumpkin Pie Spice. This is not because the pumpkin spice contains pumpkin, but because traditionally, it was used to flavor pumpkin pies and other baked goods containing pumpkin.

Many seasonal treats that are labeled with pumpkin spices flavors don’t actually contain pumpkin, though some do. Starbucks added pumpkin puree to its Pumpkin Spice Latte ingredients in 2015.

In popular culture, the release of pumpkin spice products, often in early autumn and, increasingly, later summer, is seen as a sign of a new season. (And an example of seasonal marketing that begins earlier and sooner). Around this time, it’s common to hear about and debate the presence (or absence) of pumpkin in Pumpkin Spice.

What exactly is temaki?

You might know what temaki means if you are familiar with the meaning of karate, which is “empty hands.” This is especially true now that you’ve learned maki refers primarily to sushi rolls. Did you guess the “hand roll?” You’re right! A temaki is a Japanese maki that consists of vegetables, fish, and sushi rice stuffed together, then covered in a delicious, salty nori. The temaki is rolled in a cone-shaped shape. This makes it easy to eat this type of roll with your hands. Bon appe–wait. Correction: itadakimasu!
